Music Video Analysis - Britney Spears Circus

I am going to be analysising the video to circus by Britney Spears. The song is in the genre of pop, the video has the characterisitcs of this genre by having the artist in it and her being the main focus. The lyrics have a definite relationship with the visuals, the tittle of teh song is linked to the costume and the whole idea of the song is linked to the costume and the whole idea of the video. I would say the link is that she is performing in the circus arena and feels she is being watched like an animal. I would say the visuals amplify the lyrics as the song is saying `like a circus' and this is amplified so that they are in a circus with Britney in control. It's also representative as it shows what was going on in Britney's life with everyone watching her and things always going on being a bit mad like a circus. The visuals are parallel to the music, the cuts speed up with the pace of the music. This leads to more cutes during the performance element of the video in the chorus. There are also choreographed dance moves to fit with the music of the video. I think that the record company are looking to sell this track by the lyrics relation to the recent media frenzy around Britney. The video represents Britney as being sexy and in control again by being the ring master, maybe it even hints at her contolling the media cirus around her. This is just what Britney's image needed as she had just come back from taking time out and letting herself go slightly. I think the video relates to her previous videos as she is the main focus with the videos centered around her. I feel that Britney is very sexualised in this video although her being in control doesn't make her seem exploited. They have turned the traditional ring leader costume into something much sexy as well as the costume with nothing but groups of diamonds to show Britney is back and sexier than ever. We also get more close ups of her face showing suggestive facial expressions than previous videos. At the very begining of the music video we see Britney at a dressing table the video uses intertextuality by having a shot that allows us to see the perfumes shes using are from her range. This will add to the enjoyment of the video for big fans as they can recognise tem and relate to using the perfumes and feel like the star. This is also an example of synergy. The video is mainly performance however you could you could argue that it is slightly concept with the idea of a circus.
